Running around and expending energy can be fun (particularly when a game of laser tag is involved), but safety during physical activity is key. A small accident can turn into big trouble if cuts, bruises, sprains, or even broken bones are involved. Make sure that you know how to prepare for a day of activity the right way to avoid these potential perils!
Practice Sensible Safety During Physical Activity
Safety starts from the ground up. In this case, that means wearing the appropriate shoes for… whatever it is you’re doing. Most sports and games call for sneakers, or athletic shoes, which make it more difficult to slip and fall via the grips on the bottom. Too many people play barefoot or in inappropriate shoes, like flip-flops, which increase the chance for something painful happening to the foot. It may seem more comfortable to go this route, but you won’t think that when your toes have been stepped on by another person!
Start slow in whatever you’re doing. Take the time to stretch, to make sure you’re properly hydrated, before getting out there. Follow the old saying “wait a half-hour after eating before swimming”… or something like it to avoid cramping up following a meal as you jump into play. Similarly, take breaks in between so that you can catch your breath and grab some water to keep from getting dehydrated! Finally, ensure that you’re wearing the right clothes for the occasion – you don’t want to be running around and sweating in long sleeves, after all!
Would you say that you’re “in-tune” with your body? Part of safety during physical activity is knowing what your body is telling you and what it needs. That may be rest or water or to stop entirely after a long time running around and exerting energy. If you are experiencing shortness of breath or other unusual symptoms, stop what you’re doing and take a breather. If this continues, then you should speak with someone or call a physician in case of an emergency.
You want to be able to participate for as long as possible, so take these tips to heart when engaging in any high-energy activity. If you treat your body right, then it will reward you by working in top shape so that you can get another game in. It won’t be fun for anyone if you end up on the sidelines because of an injury!
