Science of Lasers and Its Role in the Game

We’ve previously discussed the history of laser tag and how the game got its start decades ago. Of course, there’s more to it than how it began; the game has science and technology behind it that most people don’t even question, but which you may now be wondering about. After all, how much do you really know about the science of lasers and the more technical aspects of this activity?

Computer Programming and the Science of Lasers

Lasers are used in a lot of different “arenas” (so to speak) from the military to the police and entertainment. Lasers allow a person to better aim the infrared signal, and it’s the infrared signal that transmits data between suits. It’s easier to see the laser beams in most centers because of the traces of fog that are used and which hang in the air, not only making those lasers much more visible, but which also contribute to the atmosphere of the game.

Generally, the science of lasers works in that when this beam is “fired” from the phaser, it is directed toward the packs that are worn by the other players. The packs are set up to register when they are tagged by the infrared beam. That’s how other players’ packs are able to take note of the phaser that “shot” them to score accordingly.

Another thing not considered by many is that there is also outdoor play (and not just indoor arenas). As expected of equipment in a completely different environment, it “is generally expected to function well at longer ranges, even in daylight, so higher output power and specially designed optics are often a requirement.” Simply put, these phasers and vests/packs have to be designer in a new way that allows for sunlight. There are other obstacles that come with working outdoors, such a the effects that weather has on the equipment, but the concept is generally the same.

Something to keep in mind is that the kind of equipment and its capabilities depends on what types of phasers and vests are used at that particular location. It isn’t only hardware that keeps the game running, though; there is software, or computer programming, behind everything that makes the system tick. “The resulting game play mechanics can result in anything,” including the variety of types of sci-fi and fantasy games that exist at ShadowLand. In short, the science of lasers in conjunction with laser tag programming opens a variety of doors to games that can enjoyed by all.
